Argumentative: Is Single-sex school better than coed school.

Single-sex school is a school that accepts boys or girls exclusively, that has been the traditional situation for independent schools. Coed school educates boys and girls together. Which education system is better has been discussed for years, and each education system has its own advantages and limitations. In my faith, coed school is better than single-sex school.
Single-sex school is well-known as students in single-sex school have much better academic result compared to coed school. It is, of course, generally single-sex school students do concern more about study and be more hardworking than co-ed school students since students in single-sex school have minimization of distraction. In a recent report on NBC Nightly News, Professor Kathy Piechura-Couture of Stetson University, reported that over the four years of pilot study, 55% of boys in the coed classrooms scored proficient on the FCAT, compared with 85% of boys in the all-boys classes.

And also single-sex school is better for socialization of students. Boys have always felt a need to impress girls in the classroom and girls usually feel as though boys are always teasing them. Children are subjected to an avalanche of pressures from every quarter to become adults before they are ready to do so. Single-sex school can let them be children for a few more years. Single sex education with its gentler, more controlled social outlets is just the ticket for many children.
However co-ed school has advantages that singles-sex schools limit. Firstly, students in coed school have more social skill. In co-ed school, males and females have opportunity to cooperate with each other. Co-ed schools foster realistic working environments that would prepare students for their future in the working world and they will be equipped with the right social skills.

Secondly, it is not quite real that students in co-ed schools do not perform as well as students that fostered by single-sex school. From some people’s thinking, single sex school student’s performing better than comparable co-ed school is because that they get much better students. From some extent, co-ed school students can perform as good as single sex school. Looks at co-education in Ireland in the nineties concludes that from co-ed schools actually do best in the Leaving Certificate Examination. And in 2005, boys Victoria School was contemplating going co-education. Those pro-co-ed old boys from the Victoria School list advantages of allowing girls into class. Among the advantages they list was that it would push because reduced places for both sexes would mean only the best would get in.

Furthermore co-ed school is better for students’ personal improvement. From the study, it shows that boys are always good at mathematics and science whereas girls always do much better in literature, English and humanities. Co-ed education can led the boy improve more on literature, English and humanities which girls can do better. Girls can also improve a lot on mathematics and science that are boys’ specialty. Other than that, mixed schools will generally have a much broader range of subjects on offer to their pupils. At Presentation College all subjects taught are offered to girls and boys on an equal footing so that everyone benefits from the wide range of subject choice. For example boys in RI are not available to take subject such as cooking whereas RGS girls have opportunity to take.

Also, students in co-ed schools are more confident than single-sex schools’ students. The Irish Times, in November last year published a summary of the main findings. The report shows that both girls and boys in co-ed school said they were more self confident, well-balanced and better equipped to make new friends than their counterparts in single-sex schools. It is because that friendship develops in a very natural way in co-ed schools because the mixing is a by-product of the event. This friendly atmosphere continues into the classroom allowing young people to express their views openly and assertively.
All in all, coed school is better for students developing and their future. And it can be the best system of education in the future.

Political issue: democracy create stability in society

Since there are more and more people asking for social stability. “Democracy” becomes a hot topic worldwide in recent years.

So, what is democracy?

Democracy is the system of rule by the people. It is also known as the rule by majority. The ideas of ‘majority wins’ and ‘power to the people’ are the main ideas that are upheld in democracy. However, there is always an argument about whether democracy creates stability in society.

There are a lot of people disagree with the opinion that democracy may creates stability.Democracy is the rule by majority. Therefore the whole society may be dominated by the majority group. And it is obvious that a government which belongs to majority cannot completely satisfy the needs of minority. The minority may get no benefit or only a little. And the majority may make policies that harm the benefits of the minority. It cannot help to maintain harmony between majority and minority group. Hence a conflict may be caused because of inequality in economic, social or political aspects between those two groups which decrease the stability of whole society. This is also one of the key why the conflict between majority Protestant and minority catholic in North Ireland happened and is still no longer solved.

Even though this may seem threatening the stability in society, democracy still has its own advantage to create stability. In a democratic society, all the people have equal access rights and most of policies are agreed by most of members in society. Therefore there will be less argument against policies that are published. Even more it can prevent “super power” in society. Civilian control of the society is often seen as necessary to prevent dictatorship and interference with political affairs. Comparing with the other kinds of social systems such as authoritarianism or totalitarianism, democracy protects human rights of the members of society much more. For example, in military-authoritarian Myanmar, human rights are abused by the authoritarian government. People in Myanmar find no ways to protect their own rights, which can cause instability in whole society. It is also the reason to explain the religion conflicts in totalitarian Iraq. And it can also to explain why the most of western democratic countries have much better human right record.

Also, democracy has freedom of speech. This means that all the members of society can publish their opinions as they want. Newspaper, television, these kinds of mass media can act as “supervisor” in society and can help to protect benefits of members of society. Those kinds of factors all can help to create stability in society.

It is true that democracy may be abused by some of majority groups. But we can choose limited democracy instead of unlimited democracy. Limited democracy is the one where the members of society only vote for those things which are acceptable within the framework of a constitution. This kind of democracy not only prevents the illegal events of government, but also can help to protect benefits of minority. Hence a relatively stable society can be created.

In my opinion, limited democracy can create stability in society. Maybe in short term democracy does not create stability as efficiently as those kinds of authoritarian or totalitarian society and it is much harder for government to control society in limited democracy. But in long term, it will be much more stable in democratic society. Freedom and equality will be flying in the sky of democracy.

Social/Teen Issue

http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/03/05/america/Student-Speech.php
Appeals court hears Conn. teen's appeal on school punishment for vulgar Web speech

My View

This article that I got from The IHT is about, that an American teen used vulgar slang in an Internet blog to complain about school administrators and have been punished by the school.

As it is well known, while the Internet is more and more common for every sphere, it has completely change our students’ communicate either.

According to the article, we can know that the girl is a quite excellent student in school who used to serve for the student council. However, as we can read from the article, she wrote that Jamfest’ was canceled due to douchbags in central office and another administrator was pissed off.
In today’s world, a lot of people find that since the Internet has become popular, people used more vulgar slang in their writing. In my opinion, it is due to when people write on the Internet, they will think that no duty will be afforded.
“.S. District Judge Mark Kravitz, denying Doninger's request for an injunction, said he believed she could be punished for writing in a blog because the blog addressed school issues and was likely to be read by other students”. From the judges saying, we can know that when you write or say something, you should be clear enough about the result will get and whether you can afford the duty or not. Like the girl we mentioned, she didn’t consider about the influence of her articles to the students who have read it.
As we know about the latest news in Hong Kong, that Edison Chan’s private photo had been exposed by someone. He put it all the privacy data onto the Internet, which cause a quite bad influence and supposed to be a crime. It is an event that the transmitter does not have any responsibility of his action and the hurt to the victims.

Our internet world is so chaotic that we need to do something to help changing it being much better than present. As a user of Internet, we should try our best to keep the rule of Internet and intensify the responsibility to protect this mental world. I believe, from our effort, we can build the most fantastic community on the internet some time.
